The rosy photograph of cigarette commercials is a far cry from the grim reality that smoking brings. Rather than help you cope with the complexities of contemporary living, smoking brings many people closer to the grave.

Lung cancer is a disease that can in many cases be prevented. Groups that promote non-smoking as part of their religion, such as Mormons and Seventh-day Adventists, have much lower rates of lung cancer and other smoking-related cancers," it added.

Aside from lung cancer, smoking damages the cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems of the body. The irritating substances found in a cigarette can disturb the bronchial passages and fill the lungs with mucus.

Normally, glands in the interior lining of the lungs permanently yield mucus. Together with dirt and bacteria, the mucus is expelled from the lungs by the activity of cilia or small hair-like projections.

Inhaled smoke, however, interferes with the activity of cilia and stimulates mucus production. Because of this, mucus, tar and other bacteria are trapped in the lungs. Smoker's cough is a sign that the lungs are clogged with mucus and coughing is the body's effort to get rid of tar and phlegm.

Bacteria in the lungs can later lead to bronchitis (the Inflammation of the bronchial tubes) or emphysema in which the air passages of the lungs are enlarged. This makes breathing difficult and can damage the heart. Atherosclerosis (the hardening of the arteries) and thrombosis (the formation of blood clots) are base in smokers because the level of fatty acids and cholesterol in the blood is raised.

Bad Breath and Smoking

For most of us, there's a clear correlation in the middle of bad breath and smoking: if you smoke, you will have an nasty tobacco odor on your breath that all non-smokers will detect if they are close enough. This is a question because saliva plays an foremost role in inhibiting the multiplication of anaerobic bacteria, which live at the back of the tongue, and sometimes in spaces in the middle of teeth and gums, and in the middle of the teeth. These anaerobic bacteria (bacteria which live where there is no oxygen) produce volatile sulfur compounds (Vsc) when they suck in proteins for nutrients. So bad breath and smoking go hand in hand because smoking decreases saliva and a decrease in saliva results in an increase in Vsc producing anaerobes in the mouth.

Smoking also increases the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Smokers apparently have more cavities that non-smokers. They also have gums that tend to cut off from the teeth and recede, leaving exposed roots and spaces in the middle of gums and teeth where those Vsc producing bacteria can flourish. The roots of the teeth, which are supposed to be protected by healthy gums, are not covered with enamel, so they are more subject to tooth decay. In this scenario, bad breath and smoking ensue from an unhealthy mouth full of tooth decay, periodontal disease, and proliferating Vsc producing bacteria.

It's not just bad breath and smoking that you need to worry about: other tobacco products carry similar risks. Pipe smoking and cigar smoking cause all the same problems as cigarette smoking, and chewing tobacco has all these and more. Smokeless tobacco oftentimes has sugar added to it, and may consist of particles of grit, both of which have implications for oral health. The relationship in the middle of sugar and dental cavities is well known, and chewing on sand will put wear and tear on tooth enamel, also contributing to tooth decay.

So it's not just the odor of cigarette smoke on the breath and that brownish yellow stain on the teeth that you need to think about when you get close to man else. The best explication is, of course, to quit smoking, but if you can't do that, use a good breath stock that will help control the Vsc producing bacteria that link bad breath and smoking.
